Commentary

Let's say your farm is Creekside, one of 10 farms in the data pool.

In 2023 the Creekside farm (red dot) returned a gross margin of 30.04 % based on direct costs of crops sold.

Creekside's gross margin ranked 5th of 10 farms. The other anonymous farms are yellow dots. Note that dots can overlap.

Creekside's sales were $ 358.52 / acre across all crops.

2023 was a good year for Creekside, generating healthy margins on modest sales dollars per acre.

Data Privacy and Security. Solved.

There are 4 menus at the base of the visual: Farm, Year, Span, Units. Menu selections change the content of the visual.

Each farmer sees only their farm in the Farm menu, and sees only their farm data.

A multi-farm business sees all their farms in the Farm menu, as in the example below:

Commentary

During the 4 year period 2020-2023 Creekside farm returned an average gross margin of 22.88 % based on direct costs of crops sold.

Average sales per acre for Creekside was

$ 319.72 / acre, well below some other farms which clustered near $400 and even $450 per acre.

Over these 4 years Creekside ranked near the bottom of the anonymous farm pool at 8th of 10.

Creekside is underperforming.

AgrasAI can help.

To begin, let's look at crop margins from all farms...

4 Crops Gross Margin one year

How did crops perform in one year?

Commentary

These are the crops and their gross margins for 2023 based on direct costs and sales from the 10 anonymous farms in the data pool (each farmer sees only their farm)

The vertical yellow line is the average gross margin for all crops from all farms.

In 2023

  • Lentil Green Large (LNT G L)
  • Chickpea Kabuli Large (CHK K L)
  • Lentil Red (LNT R)

performed well.

Whereas

  • Oats (OAT)
  • Barley Malt (BLY M)
  • Barley Feed (BLY F)

underperformed.

5 Crops Gross Margin multi-year avg

How did crops perform over multiple years?

Commentary

In any given year a crop or farm can perform well, or not so well.

Over a 4 year average the highest lowest margin crops and highest lowest margin farms will emerge.

In 2023 Lentils Green Large (LNT G L) was the top performing crop in the farm pool, yet over 2020-2023 Lentils Green Large generated just average returns.

Next we bring together a farm and it's crops over 1 year and a 4 year average.

The objective is to identify a higher margin crop portfolio using AgrasAI analytics.

6 Farm Crop Sales multi-year avg

What were your farm's crop sales over multiple years?

Commentary

We can filter this visual using the

Crop Category and Rebalance menus to show fewer crops and reduce clutter.

The orange bar shows Sales % of a Farm in a crop over a Span of 4 years.

The Span menu contains:

1y, 2y avg, 3y avg, and 4y avg which is used here.

The yellow bar shows Farm Crop Margin % for the Creekside farm, and the white bar shows All Farms Crop Margin % for all farms in the data pool.

We see Wheat Durum (WHT DUR) was

17.25 % of Creekside's sales over the 4 year period 2020-2023.

Creekside's margin on Durum was a respectable 26.63 %, and for all farms in the data pool the margin on Durum was even higher at 30.00 %.

Notice the orange bars show crops in descending Sales %.

It's useful to compare crop margins for a Farm vs. All Farms.

Barley Malt and Oats have been poor performers for Creekside. Fortunately

Sales % exposure to these two crops has been nominal.

Creekside underperforms the farm pool in Wheat Hard Red Spring (WHT HRS) and Flax (FLX):

10.72 % vs. 18.44 % and 21.41 % vs 28.79 %.

Creekside outperforms the farm pool in Canola (CNL): 33.85 % vs. 30.22 %.

7 Farm Crop Sales Rebalance

What crops should my farm reduce exposure to?

Commentary

Filtering the list of crops for Creekside by Rebalance Less leaves three crops:

Wheat Hard Red Spring (WHT HRS)

Barley Malt (BLY M)

Oats (OAT)

Only Wheat HRS had a positive gross margin over the 4 year period 2000-2023.

Yet the margin on HRS is not compelling at 10.72 % vs. all farms at 18.44 %.

AgrasAI recommends less exposure to these crops.

Notice the metric in the top right hand corner of the visual: 25.85 % of Creekside's sales over the 4 year period 2020-2023 were in crops with underperforming margins.

What crops should my farm increase exposure to?

Commentary

Filtering the list of crops for Creekside by Rebalance More leaves two crops:

Lentil Red (LNT R)

Mustard Yellow (MUS Y)

Both crops generated strong margin's over the 4 year period 2000-2023 at 42.47 % and 35.81 % respectively.

Yet the Sales % in these crops was low at 10.80 % and 7.51 %.

AgrasAI recommends more exposure to these crops.

Notice the metric in the top right hand corner of the visual: 18.32 % of Creekside's sales over the 4 year period 2020-2023 were in under represented crops with compelling margins.

As a rule we want:

Farm Crop Sales % Rebalance More

to be greater than

Farm Crop Sales % Rebalance Less

For Creekside we have the opposite:

25.85 % vs. 18.32 %.

8 Farm Crop Yield

Q What is my crop yield?

Crop Yield is a universal metric, and...

...the Yield / Cost ratio (on a per acre basis) delivers an additional useful metric.

Commentary

Here we see the Jewel farm produce an average crop yield of 35.09 bushels per acre for Peas Green (PEA G) during the 3 year period 2021-2023 at an average cost of

$ 264.08 per acre.

Jewel is delivering a healthy yield at a comparatively low cost.

A variation on Yield is the Yield / Cost ratio as seen in the visualization below by changing Units to "y / c".

Now we see the Jewel farm has been an extremely efficient producer of Peas Green (PEA G) generating 0.1329 bushels for each dollar of costs. No other farm is even close.

10 AgrasAI is a Seed Stage Startup

AgrasAI has a MVP (minimum viable product) developed in Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Power BI.

The heavy lift in analytics is the data layer.

After R&D that risk is off the table.

Farm MA and farm ERP manage operations data. AgrasAI aggregates, analyzes and scorecards operations data from many farms.

v1.0 is an iPhone app with Supabase PostgreSQL data layer.

We adhere to the Berkus method to reach a $2.5m valuation.

Seed stage ownership starts at $25k for 1%, with an outlay of $1k per month for 25 months.

If you're a farm customizing your own scorecards and analytics we can fast forward your results, likely at lower cost.

About

It started with a conversation.

A farmer and family relative in Saskatchewan was discussing innovation on the farm:

  • Use an air drill and avoid tillage to reduce CO2 emissions.
  • Plant new hybrid seed to increase yield.
  • Join a crop pilot program to reduce nitrogen requirement and produce higher yield.

100 farms participated in the pilot, each farm dedicated 40 acres.

We asked:

  • What's happening on the non-pilot acres?
  • How is each crop performing?
  • How is each farm performing?

AgrasAI answers these questions and more.

Business Challenge

A farm is a business, and a farm business wants to know:

  • How well is my farm performing?
  • Is a farm a profit leader or laggard, and why?
  • What are opportunities to optimize costs, improve crop yields, maximize sales, and quantify risk?

Not Business As Usual

One farm is a data silo.

AgrasAI fast forwards beyond the farm data silo to analyze data gathered from many farms.

The benefits of analytics and AI are now available to all farms, big and small.

Leverage actionable insights not available with traditional farm management apps.

A Better AI

A better AI requires better data.

Required Data

AgrasAI gathers what farm accountants call "direct costs" and the Saskatchewan Crop Planning Guide calls "variable expenses".

Currently we don't gather "indirect costs" aka "other expenses".

We also gather seeding rates, fertilizer and pesticide amounts, liters of fuel, crop yields, crop sales and contracts, crop inventory, land lease and land mortgage expenses.

Technical Status

AgrasAI has achieved MVP (minimum viable product) using Microsoft SQL Server and Power BI.

The mobile app will be implemented in React Native. The mobile app is in design.

After 75 weeks of R&D the data risk is off the table.

We are ready for early adopters.

Next Steps

Connect with farmers, farm accountants, crop associations, multi-farm businesses.
